AMU is steeped in history of pursuing a successful foreign policy. The results of this policy are membership in the Caucasus University Association, the Turkic University Union, the Black Sea Universities Network, cooperation on exchange programs for students and university staff, academic and research activities, training of foreign students on the leading faculties, their participation in a variety of university activities, of both international and national level.
From the beginning of the 21st century, international relations of the university started to expand, as exemplified by the documents speaking for the cooperation with the Global Source Net - Azerbaijan, DAAD, FULBRIGHT, ISESCO, the European University Association, the medical faculties of the Ain Shams and Cairo universities of Egypt, the Varna Medical University of Bulgaria. AMU maintained time-honored relations with educational centers in Turkey, Russia and Georgia as well. All the above-mentioned resulted in the decision to launch an international department in 2006. Then a TEMPUS project titled “Creation of the International Relations Office at the Azerbaijan Medical University” was prepared and coordinated with University of Technology and Life Sciences in Bydgoszcz (Poland), Moulton College and the University of Northampton (Great Britain). The International Relations Office was launched in 2007.
Since its launch, the department has been implementing exchange programs, projects, and contributing to the organisation of the international conferences, symposia, seminars, and signing of the contracts with foreign universities and international organizations. Facilitated cooperation with the international organizations, such as WHO, UNICEF, the International Committee of the Red Cross, USAID, the American Austrian Foundation (AAF), the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA), as well as 55 universities, 3 clinics and 19 research and development centers.
